Labour have finally announced a candidate in the shape of Norwood Green Councilor Virendra Sharma. His own qualities aside, the choice is controversial given the suspension of their all-women shortlist, and apparent rail-roading of the wishes of the recently deceased former MP, Piara Khabra. It apparently was not a close result. It’s fairly safe to say at this point that the next MP for Ealing Southall will be male.
This 1995 article in Hinduism Today suggests why Hindu Cllr. Sharma might not wish to respect the wishes of his Sikh predecessor. This is not the first time he has sought Labour’s nomination.
The Pickled Politics blog is also fairly ruthless about the nomination claiming
“This is a huge shame because, as one party member told me earlier this morning, they have traded one old and out-of-touch fogey for another.”
His chosen campaign themes are affordable housing, safer communities and better transport links.
Less congestion on the Uxbridge Road would be nice, a congestion charge for megaphone-cars maybe?
